Helping Patients Focus on the Fight, Not Finances

From walks and runs to wine tastings, Chemo Noir supports its local Jacksonville Beach community by raising funds to support those battling cancers. Founder and chairman Katrin Casey, motivated by her own cancer journey in 2014, understands the toll of the battle.“When cancer strikes, you are fighting for your life, you are fighting for your support group, and you are fighting the financial struggle… I personally experienced it, and I knew there was a need.”

Founder’s Story

While going through nine months of chemotherapy for stage 3 colon cancer, Casey found comfort in her “Chemo Noir” nights—occasions she designated for comfort food and Pinot Noir. This personal ritual inspired her to start the nonprofit Chemo Noir aiming to host wine-centric events to raise funds. The gatherings support cancer patients and their families financially during their fight against the disease.

The organization’s annual flagship event, the “Chemo Noir 1 Mile & Tasting Event,” combines a beach fun run with wine tasting. The event draws up to 800 participants and raises up to $50,000 each year.

How Chemo Noir Supports Cancer Fighters

Since its inception in 2017, Chemo Noir has helped over 100 cancer patients with their treatment-related expenses.  Recipients report the assistance didn’t just alleviate the financial strain but also represented a community rallying around them in their toughest times. It provided a profound sense of relief and hope as well.

One recipient shared, “Just when we were at our lowest…your organization reached out to us and took the financial strain off our backs. It was like being led from the darkness into the light. We could breathe again. We could concentrate solely on my health without worrying about the financial burden. Our spirits were lifted, and we can continue our battle with strength and courage.”

As the organization’s impact expands, Casey reflects, “Our tribe of survivors, partners, volunteers, donors, vendors and community just keeps getting better, kind of like fine wine.”

Kathryn Reinheimer

Caretaker

Kathryn is a mother of three college students, with a professional background in video production and marketing. More recently, she completed yoga teacher training and pursued master’s work in psychology, reflecting her lifelong dedication to growth and resilience.

In 1999, her sweet niece, AmyCatherine, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of three. For six years, Kathryn provided steadfast support to her brother’s family, taking time off work to be by AmyCatherine’s side during her most intensive treatments at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, about every eight weeks. Tragically, AmyCatherine lost her battle with cancer at the age of nine, with Kathryn at her bedside.

Remarkably, advances in treatment mean that today, children diagnosed with leukemia have a much brighter prognosis. Thanks to immunotherapy, most children with this diagnosis now survive, a testament to the hope and progress in fighting this disease.
